UNICEF, a United Nations agency specializing in providing relief and aid to children, is exploring the implementation of a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) prototype. This is part of the agency’s continued interest in cryptocurrency and their venture into the crypto fund back in 2019. The DAO aims to facilitate communication and funding for digital public goods (DPGs) projects by providing a fair distribution of power and communication between stakeholders globally.
The DAO pilot is still in its early stages and is currently being developed on top of the Layer 2 solution Polygon. Its ultimate goal is to enable stakeholders to collaborate and decide on what features need improvements and fund any necessary development. The agency has been experimenting with open-source voting tools, such as Snapshot, to explore different governance proposals that are similar to other decentralized organizations.
