Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is reportedly considering the development of a standalone text-based content app that would support ActivityPub, the decentralized social networking protocol used by Twitter rival Mastodon and other federated apps. According to sources familiar with the matter, the app will be branded as Instagram and will allow users to register and login through their Instagram credentials. An internal product brief has reportedly been seen by Moneycontrol, detailing various product features of the app.
It remains unclear whether the app, codenamed P92, is still in the idea stage or if development has begun. A source close to the project has suggested that it is still a work in progress. In a statement, a Meta spokesperson said, “We’re exploring a standalone decentralized social network for sharing text updates. We believe there’s an opportunity for a separate space where creators and public figures can share timely updates about their interests.”
